  6. This document contains important information regarding the online
  7. documentation for BBEdit, as well as known conflicts with third-party
  8. software. Please read it carefully before installing the Acrobat Reader
  9. or making use of the electronic documents.

  15. unauthorized redistribution and duplication. If you are using a non-

  23. Using Acrobat Reader 
  24. ===== ======= ======

  26. Acrobat Reader requires the Adobe Type Manager (ATM) to run. If you do
  27. not already have a full version of ATM installed, the Acrobat Reader
  28. Installer will install a minimal version of ATM in the Acrobat Reader
  29. folder, for its own use.

  31. BBEdit User Manuals
  32. ====== ==== =======

  34. For your convenience, the BBEdit user manual is provided in two different
  35. page layouts:
  36.  
  37.     -    "BBEdit 6 Manual (Letter).pdf" contains the manual in US Letter
  38.         (8.5 x 11") format, suitable for printing on most printers.
  39.  
  40.     -    "BBEdit 6 Manual (A4).pdf" contains the manual in A4 (210 x 297
  41.         mm) format, suitable for printing on printers supporting the A4
  42.         paper size.

  44. Known Issues
  45. ===== ======

  47. "Can't Purge a Locked Block" error
  48. ------ ----- - ------ ------ -----
  49.  
  50. If you receive this error message when trying to launch BBEdit, your
  51. system has been infected with the MDEF-B virus (or a variant of it). To
  52. correct this, run the Disinfectant utility to identify and repair any
  53. infected files.
  54.

  56. PGPmenu Conflicts
  57. ------- ---------
  58.  
  59. Current (as of this writing) versions of PGPmenu are known to conflict
  60. with BBEdit in two ways:
  61.  
  62.     -    PGPmenu consumes approximately 500K of BBEdit's own application
  63.         memory when BBEdit starts up. If you are going to use PGPmenu
  64.         within BBEdit, you should add 500K to BBEdit's "Preferred"
  65.         memory size.
  66.         
  67.     -    In some circumstances, using a key equivalent for a menu item
  68.         will cause the wrong menu title to become highlighted (or stay
  69.         highlighted)

  72. Object Support Library Problems
  73. ------ ------- ------- --------
  74.  
  75. There is a bug in certain versions of the Object Support Library, a
  76. component of the OS used to support scriptable applications. This bug
  77. potentially affects all scriptable applications, not just BBEdit. Inside
  78. of BBEdit, the most common manifestation of this problem is an
  79. "insufficient memory" error message that results when you choose "About
  80. BBEdit..." Another frequently reported symptom is that BBEdit's
  81. scripting dictionary is unavailable when using the "Open Dictionary..."
  82. command from Apple's script editor (or other OSA script-authoring
  83. environments).
  84.  
  85. Version 1.2 of the Object Support Library (OSL) corrects the underlying
  86. fault. If necessary, the BBEdit installer will install OSL 1.2 when you
  87. perform an Easy Install of BBEdit.
  88.  
  89. The updated OSL is included with MacOS 8. If you're using an earlier
  90. version of the OS, you can obtain the latest OSL via anonymous FTP from
  91. <ftp://ftp.scripting.com/apple/objectSupportLib.sit.hqx>.

  94. VM 8.0 Fix
  95. -- --- ---
  96.  
  97. We have identified a Mac OS 8.0 compatibility issue, which arises when
  98. using Apple's virtual memory (VM). Although this issue was originally
  99. confirmed to exist on 68040 systems, we have reason to believe that it
  100. may also occur on PowerPC systems.
  101.  
  102. When using our products, the problem manifests itself as generalized
  103. instability when running BBEdit (any version) under Mac OS 8.0 with
  104. virtual memory turned on. BBEdit may sometimes crash when starting up,
  105. but if it doesn't, other misbehaviors will present themselves, such as
  106. errors or garbled text when copying, pasting, or scrolling text.
  107.  
  108. However, the effects of this compatibility issue are not specifically
  109. related to BBEdit, and may affect other applications as well.
  110.  
  111. This compatibility issue has been addressed in Mac OS 8.1, and we
  112. recommend that you upgrade to the newer version, if possible. In the
  113. meantime, we have written a system extension which should correct the
  114. problem. Open the "VM 8.0 Fix" folder, and drag the "VM 8.0 Fix" file on
  115. to your active System folder. Then restart your machine.
  116.  
  117. The VM 8.0 Fix extension does not patch any Mac OS routines, nor will it
  118. load on any version of the Mac OS other than 8.0.0.
  119.

  121. "Can't Undo" Alerts
  122. ------ ----- ------
  123.  
  124. A number of actions, most notably many extensions, are not undoable. As
  125. a matter of course, BBEdit will pose an alert: "<action> is not
  126. undoable. Do you still wish to proceed?" If these alerts annoy you, you
  127. can turn them off. The appropriate option is in the Text Editing section
  128. of the "Preferences" window. (The "Preferences" command is found under
  129. the Edit menu.)
  130.

  132. Desktop File Problems
  133. ------- ---- --------
  134.  
  135. On occasion, you may find that the Finder does not display the correct
  136. icon for BBEdit documents, or that you cannot drag documents onto the
  137. BBEdit application (or an alias to the application) to open them.
  138.  
  139. This behavior is not indicative of a problem with BBEdit; rather, it is
  140. an indication that the database that the Finder uses to associate
  141. applications, icons, and documents (known as the "Desktop file") has
  142. become confused or corrupted.
  143.  
  144. When this happens, it is usually desirable to force the Finder to rebuild
  145. the Desktop. To do this, reboot your machine, and immediately hold down
  146. the Shift key until the message "Extensions Off" appears. As soon as
  147. this message appears, release the Shift key, and hold down the Command
  148. and Option keys. For each volume that mounts at startup, the Finder
  149. will ask whether you wish to rebuild the Desktop. Click "OK", and the
  150. Finder will do so.
  151.  
  152. Corruption in the Desktop file can also render BBEdit unable to locate
  153. external services. If you have a service installed (say, the THINK
  154. Project Manager), but BBEdit does not make the service available to you,
  155. rebuilding your desktop will usually help. (This assumes that you've
  156. already checked to make sure that the application you are trying to use
  157. is of an appropriate version.)

  160. External Services and Startup Performance
  161. -------- -------- --- ------- -----------

  163. The first time BBEdit starts up, it attempts to locate the application
  164. associated with each external service. If the application isn't found,
  165. BBEdit will keep trying to find it on subsequent occasions, until it
  166. either finds the application, or until you turn off the corresponding
  167. check-box in the "Tools" section of the Preferences dialog.
  168.  
  169. Since an unsuccessful search for an application takes time, you should
  170. turn off the check boxes corresponding to any application you do not have
  171. available. Doing so will decrease the time it takes BBEdit to start up.
  172.  
  173. You can also improve BBEdit's startup performance by removing unused
  174. BBEdit tools from the "Plug-Ins" folder located in the "BBEdit Support"
  175. folder.
  176.  
  177.  
  178. Memory Usage
  179. ------ -----
  180.  
  181. BBEdit uses System temp memory to hold the files it opens, so you will
  182. not need to increase the application's partition size to edit large
  183. files. However, if BBEdit warns you that it is low on memory, then
  184. adding 200K or so to its "preferred" memory allocation may help. Adding
  185. more than a megabyte or so to BBEdit's preferred memory allocation is
  186. generally counter-productive.

  189. Printing with Substituted Fonts
  190. -------- ---- ----------- -----
  191.  
  192. Because of idiosyncracies in various printer drivers, including both the 
  193. LaserWriter and StyleWriter drivers, there are some character spacing 
  194. anomalies when printing with a substituted monospaced font (i.e. Monaco). 
  195. To avoid these problems, print in a non-substituted, monospaced PostScript 
  196. font such as Courier. (With BBEdit, you can of course edit in one font, 
  197. and print in another.)

  200. Fractional Spacing
  201. ---------- -------
  202.  
  203. BBEdit supports a "Fractional Spacing" option when printing. We
  204. recommend that you use this option if you are printing in a small
  205. (less than 9-point) font size.

  208. LaserWriter "Preferences Damaged" Warning
  209. ----------- --------------------- -------
  210.  
  211. On occasion, version 8.2.2 of the LaserWriter driver will issue a
  212. warning message about missing or damaged preferences. We have contacted
  213. Apple regarding this issue, and they believe it to be due to a bug in
  214. the LaserWriter driver. We have also had reports that the recently
  215. released LaserWriter 8.3 driver may exhibit this same problem. If you
  216. get this message, simply choose "Page Setup" or "Print" from the File
  217. menu, and you should be able to continue without any difficulty.

  220. McAfee VirusScannerPPC
  221. ------ ---------------
  222.  
  223. We have received reports that McAfee's VirusScannerPPC version 2.1.7-PPC
  224. may cause BBEdit to freeze during multi-file search operations. Suggested
  225. workaround is to disable the McAfee software and/or update to a modern
  226. virus scanning package.
